Motivational Interviewing Spirit

Acceptance

-Does not mean that you approve or go along with a person’s actions. Your approval is not what leads a supervisee to change.

-Demonstrate a person’s worth and potential.

-Be empathetic. Make an effort to understand a supervisee’s perspective.

-Avoid attempts to coerce or control a supervisee by telling them what they cannot do. Realistically a person can make their own choices. Instead discuss how certain choices come with negative consequences.

-Acknowledge a person’s strengths and efforts. (Affirmation)

-When practicing to show acceptance, make an effort to demonstrate MI Spirit, Collaboration, Compassion, and Evocation.
