Motivational Interviewing Spirit

Collaboration

-Activate a supervisee’s own motivation and resources for change, instead of coercing them.

-Form a partnership with the supervisee by working with them on change.

-Treat the supervisee as an expert on their own change process.

-Remember the supervisee has vital information on what they need to do to change.

-Remain interested and supportive as you explore the supervisee’s change.

-Resist the urge to problem solve, instead transfer responsibility to the supervisee.

-When attempting to collaborate with a supervisee, make an effort to demonstrate MI Spirit, Acceptance, Compassion, and Evocation.
