Eliciting and Strengthening Change Talk

Intentionally draw out expressions of desire, ability, reason, need and/or commitment to change.
  • People normally proceed through change by resolving their own ambivalence or conflicting feelings about why they should and should not change.
  • People are more committed to what they hear themselves say.
  • If you attempt to coerce a supervisee, they are more likely to become dishonest.
  • Do not coerce the supervisee. Allow them to resolve their ambivalence with interactions that demonstrate the spirit of motivational interviewing: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and evocation.
  • Use strategies to elicit and strengthen change talk.
