Switching Between MI and Other Methods

Move flexibly between methods.

  • MI is best for moving resistant supervisees gradually toward a commitment to change.
  • When a supervisee is ready for or requires immediate action, use more direct strategies.
  • Even when using other methods, staff may have options to use interactions that demonstrate the spirit of MI: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and evocation.
  • During an ORAS interview, CCP or Cognitive Behavioral Programming: If a supervisee becomes argumentative or tensions arise consider a strategic response. If a supervisee expresses ambivalence use core skills. Use strategies to elicit and strengthen change talk.
