Responding to Change Talk


Reflecting Change Talk
  • Make a statement that guesses at change talk that has not yet been spoken.

  • Supervisee: I’ve been spending time with old friends.

  • Staff: And that’s starting to worry you.

  • Supervisee: I’m going to make employment and family my priorities.

  • Staff: Because you know that it is important to stay out of trouble.

Also consider responding to change talk by using questions that ask for elaboration, affirming the change talk, and summarizing the change talk.
