Summarizing Change Talk

Pull together different change talk that the supervisee has told you at different times.

Staff: “Let me tell you what I hear so far. You weren’t too happy to come here, and you don’t want to be lectured about getting into trouble. You feel that you have disappointed your family by going back and forth to jail. Staying sober and working full-time the last six months have made you feel better about your chances for success. Is that right?”


Also consider responding to change talk by using questions that ask for elaboration, affirming the change talk, and reflecting the change talk.
