Engaging

Supervisees are making decisions about whether staff can be trusted.

  • Be sure the supervisee understands your role as an officer. Be clear on what is and isn’t negotiable.
  • Establish mutual respect as a guideline for meetings.
  • Use interactions that demonstrate the spirit of MI: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and evocation to build a working relationship.
  • Minimize resistance by using strategic responses.
  • Ensure that the supervisee feels involved in the process.
  • Use core skills to gain an understanding of the supervisee’s perspective.
