Focusing

Supervisees do not have clear direction.

  • A supervisee may become overwhelmed by community demands. Avoid blaming the supervisee.
  • Use interactions that demonstrate the spirit of MI: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and evocation to explore options with the supervisee.
  • Engage in discussions about ORAS results and the importance to the supervisee’s future community success, and how confident they are that they will be successful in the community.
  • Stay neutral and be curious.
  • Ensure that the supervisee feels involved in the process.
  • Respond to change talk with elaboration, affirmation, reflection and summaries.
  • Respond to sustain talk, with a Strategic Response.
  • Use Core Skills to assist the supervisee in becoming clear on the direction and goals that will work best for them.
  • WATCH VIDEOS OF OFFICERS FOCUSING SUPERVISEES:
  • If the supervisee disengages return to engaging. When the supervisee is focused on an agenda begin evoking.
