Planning

Supervisees see change as important and are confident they can change.

  • This is a first step towards action and is most effective when the supervisee has decided on a direction for change.
  • Negotiate and collaborate with the supervisee.
  • Use interactions that demonstrate the spirit of MI: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, and evocation to ensure that a supervisee takes ownership.
  • Use Core Skills to get the supervisee to be more specific on change plans.
  • For supervisees who can give details about change plans, switch between MI and other methods.
  • This is a good time to bring up possible obstacles and collaborate on how the supervisee will handle them.

  • If a supervisee returns to ambivalence or questions the direction return to evoking.
